How does a dimly lit room, peaceful music, and a massage sound?
What is Reflexology?
Reflexology is a science that deals with the principle that there are reflexes in the feet that correspond to all of the glands, organs and parts of the body. Reflexology is a unique method of using the thumb and fingers on these reflex areas. Reflexology is acupressure based on releasing the meridian endings found on the feet.
How Does Reflexology Work?
The feet are reflecting maps of the body. Energy travels through twenty meridians that flow vertically through the body. These meridians bring energy to major organs, and by releasing blocks (painful areas) in the meridian endings in the feet, the reflexologist releases the blocks in the organs. A clear flow of energy is essential for good health.
Where Does Reflexology Come From?
Reflexology developed from the same Chinese roots as acupressure and acupuncture. It was used in China by 4000 BC and Egypt by 2330 BC. In 1917, William H. Fitzgerald, an American ear, nose and throat doctor, having studied the healing arts in China and India, developed his ideas on "zone therapy". A number of other medical doctors used his work during the 1920’s and 1930’s including Dr. J.S. Riley. Eunice Ingham, Dr. Riley’s assistant, learned from her employer and began to study and work with different techniques from the 1930’s until her death in 1974, developing what is today known as reflexology.
What Are the Benefits of Reflexology?
Reflexology is a major tool for stress reduction, pain relief and muscle relaxation. Reflexology increases blood circulation and muscle tone. It is helpful in relieving constipation, easing menstrual cramps and pain anywhere in the body. It can speed healing and the release of body toxins and is positive for almost every chronic or acute disease or illness. Reflexology balances the organs, glands and energy throughout the body and may help with emotional issues.
What Can I Expect From A Reflexology Session?
A reflexology session lasts about 25 to 30 minutes and is followed by a foot massage. You remain fully clothed (except for shoes, socks or pantyhose) in a supine reclining position on a massage table with your feet slightly elevated.
